# Top up

£5 of reading credit, paid on Stripe’s page. It is one payment: there is no account and no subscription, and nothing renews.

**Where your data is kept.** Your balance, history and receipts are kept in this browser’s storage. Your reading is not sent anywhere unless you choose to send it, and there is no account. This is a client-side application: the pages are static files, and what you read stays in your browser rather than on a server. That is how it is for now; if encrypted vaults are added, it will be said here. A new browser, a private window or clearing site data starts again with £5.00 and no history. Credit can go below zero, and no page is blocked. What can leave your browser, when you choose to, is a payment (made on Stripe’s own page), a subscription or a reading share: [what leaves your browser, and when](https://newsroom.sgit.ai/shipped/index.html#data). [How the meter works](../meter/index.md), and [why it works this way](../articles/going-live-with-the-reading-meter.md).

Top-ups need JavaScript: the balance lives in your browser.
