The maintenance deficit, with evidence: a follow-up to Dion Wiggins' post and article on the maintenance deficit ratio, with his illustration reused, with credit, from his public post.
- The numbers, checked. Against the PHP Foundation's sources, the Sovereign Tech Agency's page and the PHP story's evidence: the ratio is 179 to 263 to 1 depending on the cut, two orders of magnitude in every case; the details that differ are listed.
- Two days on. The Dutch inventory at 12:50 UTC on 23 October: 751 products, 109 fixed. No named organisation says it was compromised through php2shell, and CISA's catalogue still lists neither flaw.
- The argument. Open source's business model pays integrators, platforms and hosts, not maintainers and packagers; AI has made finding cheap and fixing scarce. Three fixes: maintenance as a product, paid at the source, and the ratio measured everywhere.
The front page, by the editor's call. The PHP story is no longer pinned as the lead: the newest article leads, as it does by default. And the Developing story strip now sits after the SGit Newsroom masthead instead of above it, and at the top of the Briefing and Your desk views, which have no masthead.
