Who maintains the PHP you run?: a market failing both ways, the services and business models that should exist now, and why the money has to reach the people who know the code.
- Two questions. Does a switched-off site matter, and if it does, who pays to keep it maintained? The cost of the shutdowns should be measured; no named source has.
- What exists. The PHP Foundation sells sponsorship tiers, not maintenance. The PHP security team published free source backports for 7.4, 8.0 and 8.1; Zend, Ubuntu Pro, TuxCare, HeroDevs and Freexian sell fixes for old versions, with no stated share flowing back. OpenJS has had a 15% revenue-sharing partner since 2024.
- Seven services that should exist now, starting with bringing the switched-off sites back, and a path from easy to required.
Also. The maintenance deficit, with evidence refers to Dion Wiggins by name rather than with assumed pronouns, and links forward to the new article. The chat-only article's opening summary is refreshed.
