Programming, taught upside down: what Paul Lockhart said about teaching maths applies to teaching code.
- Concepts before purpose. Why programming is usually taught upside down, and why people dislike it.
- The hook is control. A thought to something that works, in a short loop: the REPL.
- The tools that got the loop right. BASIC on the ZX Spectrum, Visual Basic, the spreadsheet, Scratch and Code Club.
- The Excel irony. Taught badly, people program in Excel anyway.
- Explorer coding starts at the right end. And coding is communication: people will read more code, not less.
- Four infographics. Upside down, the loop, the Excel irony, and coding as communication.
